One Sunday
afternoon last winter in December, I decided to go with John, a friend of
mine, for a bike ride to the forest. It was very cold and foggy, and there was a lot of snow on the road. We were cycling along a country lane when we saw some
children playing on a frozen pond. Even we couldn't see them well they were teenagers because they were able to skate quite well.
Suddenly we heard a shout. To our horror one of the boys, a tall one with red jacket, had fallen through the ice ! It seems that it wasn't cold enough and the water of the pond wasn't completely frozen. We immediately rushed over to help but it was too dangerous to walk across the ice. The boy was frightened and was shouting for help. My friend and I ran to village that wasn't too far from the pond, to borrow a ladder. We knocked at the first gate and the a man opened us. When he heard about the accident he gave us a long ladder. I put the ladder on the ice and crawled very slowly across it towards the boy. When he saw me coming towards him he stopped shouting and waited patiently. I caught hold of his hand and finally managed to pull him out of the icy water. Luckily the boy wasn't hurt, just very frightened .
His parents turned up about ten minutes later. When they saw him with all his clothes wet and he was crying loudly, they were shocked and very angry with him! I felt a bit sorry for the boy. He had certainly learnt a lesson - the hard way !
