I had just finished writing a letter when the door bell rang. I
went immediately to answer it because a neighbour of mine told
me he was going to call round. When I opened the door, I saw that
there was no one there although I was sure I had heard the bell. After I looked up and down the street for a few minutes, I shut the door
again and began to wonder if I had been dreaning. I decided finally
that I had mistaken a car horn for the sound of the door bell. Just as I
was turning round, I noticed something white on the door mat. I examined it more closely and realised that someone had pushed a
note under my door. As I had never seen that handwriting before, I
began to feel a little alarmed.
